eBay is open to accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment in the future company said. And also says looking at ways to get NFTs on its platform.
As we see, around a number of companies have begun to accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. Tesla is already accepting Bitcoin as payment for its electric car.
“We are always looking at the most relevant form of payment and will continue to assess that going forward. We have no immediate plans, but cryptocurrency is something we are keeping an eye on,” eBay said in a statement to Reuters.
Jamie Iannone, eBay president, and CEO, who took the reins at eBay last year, teased the new in a segment this morning on CNBC’s Squawk Box.
Interview with CNBC, chief executive officer Jamie Iannone said accepting virtual currency was an option the company was looking at.
“we’re expanding the type of payment that we take,” he said, pointing to non-crypto payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay, adding that the company plans to “continue to look to other options, like cryptocurrencies.”
Last week, eBay disappointed investors with a weak second-quarter profit forecast. And, the company said looks at a “number of ways” to get into NFTs.
He added: “One of the great things about eBay is that when there is a new trend, it just shows up on eBay. That’s what we are seeing in areas like NFTs, which we are looking at how we can explore that better.”
NFTs are a non-fungible token that is not replaceable and can use to represent proof of ownership in digital items. No one can replace NFTs. They’ve generated more than $1.5 billion in sales in the first quarter of the year. And become especially popular within the digital art and collectibles spaces.
“We’re exploring opportunities on how we can enable it (NFTs) on eBay in an easy way,” lannone said on CNBC. “Everything that’s collectible has been on eBay for decades and will continue to be for the next few decades.”
