BitMEX partnerships with the Human Rights Foundation to give a US$150,000 grant to Calvin Kim, a Korean-based Bitcoin scaling researcher. According to BitMEX, it has renewed Calvin Kim’s developer grant until June 2022.
BitMEX cryptocurrency exchange has renewed developer grant Calvin Kim’s worth US$100,000. Another collaboration with the Human Right Foundation who provide a lump sum of US$ 50,000 in Bitcoin. These both bring Calvin’s total funding for the year to US$150,000.
Alex Hoptner, CEO of BitMex, commented:
“We are delighted to extend our financial support for Calvin for another year. In particular, we are pleased to support a Korean developer such as Calvin, as ensuring the geographic diversity of bitcoin development is an important factor to consider”,
Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer of the Human Rights Foundation, commented that they are happy to support Calvin on his quest. He noted Calvin’s quest is to help make Bitcoin a more valuable and resilient tool of liberty for people worldwide.
Additionally, an organization that has long worked promotes human rights on the Korean peninsula through technology. They are excited to support Calvin’s efforts. Also, they hope that this work can inspire others from the region to involve with Bitcoin and contributes to its mission.
For the current research, Kim plans to implement Utreexo into Bitcoin deployments, using Go and Rust programming languages. Utreexo’s algorithm promises to reduce Bitcoin’s state size from several gigabytes to less than a kilobyte.

Calvin said that the development of the Utreexo project focused on prototyping a Utreexo bitcoin full node, moving the project closer to reality. So this year, Bitmex and HRF’s financial support intends to continue what they did last year. He will continue to move the Utreexo project to something users can download and use. He thanked both BitMEX and the human rights foundation for allowing him to continue work on a project.
