In Brief:
- DapperLabs is all set and ready to bring WNBA moments to the NFT space.
- At first, WNBA moments will exist under the existing Top Shot umbrella. But the ultimate goal is to create its own dedicated environment.
Dapper Labs along with the WNBA and OneTeam Partners is all set to bring WNBA Moments to TOP SHOT. The “moments” would give fans the ability to own the in-game moments as collectibles. The inaugural pack of the licensed digital highlights will release on Friday.
Initially, Moments will include the best plays from this season. It will also feature highlight-reel snippets from top players across league history. Dapper Labs’ head of partnerships, Caty Tedman, enumerated a collection of dunks, splashes and game-winning shots stretching back 25 years.
“We really have looked at the quality of play and tried to pull in the best of the best this season,” Tedman said.
In the beginning, WNBA moments will exist under the existing Top Shot umbrella. However, the ultimate goal is to create its own dedicated environment. That is WNBA and NBA moments will exist in the user’s singular collection.
“What we’re really trying to do is create parity between the men’s and the women’s leagues,” Tedman said.
The WNBA was one of the few sports leagues to experience viewership increases in the pandemic. It’s that growth potential that makes league executives persuasive on the success of WNBA moments on the Top Shot platform.
“They were the only major team sports property that grew its TV audience through the pandemic,” Tedman said.
Different pack drops will have varying levels of scarcity, as NBA Top Shot does, Tedman said. They’ll create challenges and rewards for WNBA moments. Fans can have a say in the next mints by using #WNBATopShotThis on social media.
Earlier this month, NBA TOP SHOT, sold its exclusive tokens at the NBA Summer League Game in Vegas. Top Shot made “moments” available for exclusive purchase from a physical location. This was the first time the “moments” were sold at an NBA game.
WNBA is constantly seeking new ways to engage with fans to maximize revenue. This led the league to Dapper to fuel the innovations behind non-fungible tokens in sports.
