In Brief:
- Dapper Labs has acquired the influencer platform Brud
- The firm says the acquisition will help it build a new business unit focused on decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
- The firm has built a community in the crypto space by minting NFTs related to its characters.
Dapper Labs, the company that created CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot has acquired Brud, which creates digital influencers for a variety of ventures. The move is supposed to lead to the creation of a new business unit named “Dapper Collectives” dedicated to decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
A prominent CGI influencer, Lil Miquela, is operated by Brud. The firm has built a community around its Crypto characters through the minting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
As part of its efforts to enable DAO development, Dapper Collectives will release tools that will empower users to build their own communities on Flow.
Additionally, the team will help existing brands and companies to make the transition into a decentralized, Web3 world by consulting and collaborating with them.
As part of the acquisition, Dapper did not disclose the terms of the deal, other than that it was equity-based. Brud’s entire 32-person team, including its president and chief content officer, will join. That brings Dapper’s entire staff to 262.

Lately, decentralized autonomous organizations, or DAOs, have been a topic of hot debate in the cryptosphere. These are online communities powered by ownership stakes typically in the form of tokens that can take on nearly any focus, including investments, social interaction, or crypto project governance.
In addition to allowing individuals and companies to create, operate and participate in DAOs, Dapper Labs believes it can streamline processes associated with decentralization and embracing a Web3 world.
