In Brief:
- Venezuela’s largest airport will accept crypto payments for their flight tickets.
- Bitcoin, Petro, and Dash enabled as payment modes.
- Sunacrip, the Venezuelan cryptocurrency watchdog will regulate the payments
Venezuela’s biggest airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport, will establish a crypto payments service to purchase their flight tickets.
The airport aims to use Bitcoin, Dash, and Venezuela’s digital currency – Petro to regulate the payments. The country’s cryptocurrency watchdog, Sunacrip, will regulate the initiative.
Freddy Borges- director of Maiquetía International Airport, stated as the number of tourists visiting the country increases, the payment methods should be regulated accordingly.
“We must advance in these new economic and technological systems to be accessible,” Borges explained.
In 2019 Conviasa and in August 2021 Turpial national airlines in Venezuela already established crypto payments for their flights, and now Maiquetía International Airport will follow their path.
After the announcement to launch CBDC in Venezuela at the start of October, bitcoin payments follow their path in Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Int’l airport.
Even though Venezuela suffers from financial problems, this only triggers more growth in the cryptocurrency sector. The general public is now more leaning towards bitcoin and other forms of cryptocurrency. The Venezuelan government also seems supportive.
Probably this major move would open more opportunities for other sectors to finally chime in and get into the crypto territory.
