Online gaming corporation Valve made the announcement for its users that it will not be allowed any blockchain-based games or non-fungible token-based content on its platform ‘Steam’.
On Oct.14, Valve had made changes in its rules and guidelines. As per the changes, applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow the exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” will not be allowed to release on the platform.
SpacePirate Games, the creator, and the company behind the famous game Age of Rust, where players can collect NFTs and Bitcoins as a reward inside a game, has shared the news by posting a tweet that their game would remove from Steam.
“Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform,” the creators explained in a tweet.
CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney said that the Company would “welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group.” Epic Games is a rival company of Valve.
The use of NFTs and blockchains in gaming has gained significantly in popularity this year. Sky Mavis, the startup behind Axie Infinity, one of the most popular NFT games, recently raised $152 million in a fundraising round that valued the company at $3 billion.
