In Brief:
- Associated Press announced a collaboration with Chainlink to bring news data to blockchains.
- The data will be cryptographically signed to confirm it is from AP.
In a press release dated 22 October, Associated Press(AP) announced a collaboration with Chainlink to outsource “trusted” economics, sports, race calls datasets to leading Blockchains.
Chainlink is the world’s largest decentralized network of oracles. This joint venture will enable smart contracts on any blockchain to securely link and communicate with AP’s real-world data. Smart contracts are tamper-proof computer programs that activate a reaction every time the conditions are met. Hence, Smart contracts are quite a norm in the DeFi and NFTs. In fact, in August, Chainlink had partnered with AccuWeather to bring weather data using smart contracts.
William Herkelrath, the Managing Director at Chainlink Labs commented, “AP has established itself as one of the most trusted independent news organizations in the world for real-time news in all formats.” He added, “Given its large and continually growing repository of facts and data, combined with Chainlink’s proven oracle infrastructure for providing reliable data feeds across leading blockchain networks, it makes sense for the AP to launch a Chainlink oracle node and support innovation within emerging smart contract industries.”
Dwayne Desaulniers, AP’s director of blockchain & data licensing remarked, “Our strength at AP is trusted, factual, accurate & timely information. Chainlink is the bridge AP will use to ensure our news & data can be consumed by blockchain applications.”
The leading news organization, AP has had a past affair with blockchain-based enterprises like Everipedia oracle when in US elections 2020, the race calls were published on Ethereum blockchain to safeguard data. In a similar instance, AP had also sold a “Unique Moments NFT series” featuring photos and rare news artifacts from historic events covered by the AP throughout the last 100 years.
Thus, with the support of a Chainlink node, AP data will be dispensed and sold directly to applications functioning on various blockchains. The crux of the matter would be that the data will be cryptographically signed to confirm it is from AP. In times when fake news is on the rise, a crypto approach is what is needed the most!
