Virtual fashion collective RTFKT Studios is no stranger to its ambition to give NFTs a ‘hype’ sensibility. Now RTFKT studios partner with Takashi Murakami, a Japanese contemporary artist, to launch the NFT ‘Avatar Project’.
Together, the two are developing a series of 20,000 3-D avatars, featuring randomized features based on a randomized set of features.
To bring his well-established, cartoonish aesthetic to the characters, Murakami has contributed artwork for the eyes, lips, helmets, clothes, and ‘traits’.
RTFKT hopes the randomised creation of the characters will produce some ‘rare’ combinations of features that will become future collector’s items like those in the original work.
RTFKT’s avatars will be fully 3D rigged, allowing their owners to use them as augmented reality filters on camera, during Zoom meetings, or in games.
According to RTFKT, Murakami has been a long-standing idol of theirs. “Bringing Murakami, our favorite artist, to work with us on these avatars is a dream come true,” they wrote in a statement.
Though the release date has not been fixed, it’s anticipated to happen within the next fortnight and will appear on the dedicated website for the project.
In a 48-hour pre-sale, the first 10,000 Avatars will be made available to existing RTFKT collectors, and after that, the rest will become publicly available.
The project is a clear homage to the CryptoPunk series, developed by Larva Labs and one of the earliest NFT projects of 2017.
