In Brief:
- New York City’s mayor-elect Eric Adams said he will take his first three paychecks in Bitcoin.
- Adams also added that he wants New York City to become the “center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries.”
- Miami mayor Francis Suarez too joined in and said that he is going to take his next salary “100%” in Bitcoin.
On November 04, New York City’s new mayor-elect Eric Adams tweeted that he will take his first three paychecks in Bitcoin.
Eric Adams made this statement in response to a tweet posted by Bitcoin enthusiast Anthony Pompliano. “It is time. Who is going to be the first American politician to accept their salary in bitcoin?” Pompliano had asked on Twitter.
Joining Adam in this conversation was Miami’s mayor Francis Suarez who said that he is going to take his next salary “100%” in Bitcoin. Adams joined him and said he will take his first three paychecks in Bitcoin, and that he wants New York City to become the “center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries.”
In an interview with Bloomberg Radio, Adams mentioned Suarez and his own plan to follow him. Adams said, “He has a MiamiCoin that is doing very well. We’re going to look in the direction to carry that out ”.
Suarez, on the other hand, plans to make the Florida capital a new center of digital finance. In addition to announcing to take his salary in Bitcoin, the Miami mayor is also working on a scheme to pay city officials in cryptocurrency. In fact, Miami already has its own cryptocurrency called “MiamiCoin”, which was created in collaboration with the group CityCoin. Also, in June Suarez had called for bitcoin miners in China to mine in Miami.
The government’s inclination towards cryptocurrency has been made quite apparent in recent times. For instance, in August, Jayson Stewart, the Mayor of Missouri, Cool Valley, was raising funds to give each resident, roughly 1500 residents, $1,000 in Bitcoin.
