In Brief:
- The Costa Rican government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chia Network, Inc.
- Chia will supply technical services for the Central American country’s climate change metrics system.
- The government will use Chia’s blockchain technology to develop an open-source software platform for management of its “climate inventory”.
Chia Network, Inc., Bram Cohen’s next-generation open-source blockchain and smart transaction platform, announced on 11th November a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with the Costa Rican government.
Chia’s technical services in support of Costa Rica’s National Climate Change Metrics System (SINAMECC) using Chia’s safe, sustainable, and inclusive blockchain technology for immutable data storage are outlined in this MOU.
Costa Rica will lead the development of an open-source software platform that will be freely shared with other countries to help them better manage their climate inventories and run national registries to manage carbon inventories, climate registries, and record bilateral corresponding adjustments with trades that occur to shift credits among countries.
Chia’s support for Costa Rica’s climate leadership and genuine commitment to transparency are outlined in the MOU.
Costa Rica’s Environment and Energy Minister, Andrea Meza Murillo, claimed: “the Government of Costa Rica selected Chia as an open-source partner due to both its technical software and open-source expertise, but also the platform’s commitment to secure, sustainable, inclusive blockchain technology and immutable data storage.”
He further added, “this is a critical step toward robust, transparent cooperation on climate action focused on environmental integrity.”
On this Chia’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Gene Hoffman, stated, “we are honored to partner with Costa Rica, the recognized leader on climate action and driver behind the Paris Agreement, as another key link to an open-source blockchain as a tool for the greater global good.”
He further said, “realizing the platform’s potential in partnership with the Government of Costa Rica has been one of our most exciting ventures to date. We hold the Country’s leadership in the highest esteem and are committed to continuous management, delivery, and access to nations reshaping their climate initiatives.”
Chia is attending COP26 to support their pledge to be the rails for allowing climate inventory management. Chia’s involvement in the project will allow for a direct link to a public blockchain-based Climate Warehouse, as well as eventual project operationalization in Costa Rica and beyond.
Chia Network was announced last week as the developer of the World Bank’s Climate Warehouse’s newest and most functional prototype. The World Bank convened the Climate Warehouse, which will be deployed under international governance as the underlying data architecture that connects all national parties, market participants, and service providers in order to fulfill and hopefully exceed the goals of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Similarly, Enjin, a blockchain platform, declared that it would look into methods to use NFTs to help the United Nations achieve its sustainability and equality goals.
