In Brief:
- Discord has canceled a teased integration with NFTs due to user backlash.
- Discord CEO tweeted an image featuring the Discord layout and integration with MetaMask and Wallet Connect.
- Later, Discord backtracked and withdrew crypto integration plans.
According to Discord’s CEO and founder, Jason Citron, the company’s plans for NFT and cryptocurrency integration have been canceled.
A few days back Jason Citron tweeted “probably nothing,” along with a screenshot of the app’s user settings page, which showed an ETH logo and the option to connect digital wallets like MetaMask and Wallet Connect.
Users on Discord who are cautious of the crypto space quickly encouraged one another to cancel their Nitro subscriptions, Discord’s paid premium service that helps the platform remain ad-free.
According to one tweet with 20,000 likes, “The only thing that will change it at this point is a loud, immediate public drop in revenue.”
Discord community attributed their outrage at Citron’s tweet to the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining. Users in Discord’s NFT communities expressed concern that integrated crypto wallets would only aggravate the platform’s soaring crypto scams.
Later the CEO walked back from the NFT integration idea. Following the high user opposition towards the idea, he tweeted that Discord has “no current plans to ship” this wallet integration.
The tweet stated that Discord is currently focusing on protecting the users from scams and frauds. This is very much relevant as recently the famous digital artist Beeple’s official discord server was hacked. The hackers used the official Beeple Bot to announce a fake NFT drop, and users saw their money being stolen.
Citron’s explanation shows that Discord is listening to its community, but it remains to be seen whether Discord will try anything else related to cryptocurrency in the aftermath of this backlash.
