In Brief:
- Solana foundation published an energy use report on the network’s energy consumption and ecological impact.
- The foundation partnered with Robert Murphy to create the report.
- The report stated that a transaction on the Solana network requires less energy than two Google searches.
The Solana Foundation released an energy use report discussing the impact of the Solana network on the environment.
According to the report, a single transaction on the Solana network requires less energy than two Google searches and 24 times less energy than charging a smartphone
A transaction on the Solana Network consumes 0.00051 kWh (1,836 Joules) of energy, as stated in the report.
A single google search, on the other hand, consumes 0.0003 kWh (1,080 Joules) of energy, according to Google.
The whole Solana network consumes 3,186,000 kWh per year which equals the electricity consumption of 986 U.S. households.
The Solana network is less decentralized than Bitcoin or Ethereum, with 1,196 validator nodes processing an estimated 20 million transactions per year.
Solana uses a Proof of Stake method, which consumes far less energy than Proof of Work systems like Bitcoin and Ethereum. A bitcoin transaction, for example, uses about 4,222,800,000 joules.
Based on the usual number of transactions and the amount of energy necessary to run the network, one ETH transaction requires around 644,004,000 joules.
One ETH transaction uses the same amount of energy as hundreds of thousands of VISA card transactions.
In May 2021, the Solana Foundation teamed up with Robert Murphy to write a report that would frame the Solana network’s environmental impact.
By the end of 2021, the Foundation hopes to reduce the network’s energy use even further by implementing a program to become carbon-neutral and balance the ecosystem’s environmental footprint.
The crypto sector has always taken heat for the amount of carbon footprint it leaves and the energy consumed during transactions.
Solana network is designed in a way to be very energy efficient and is pushing to be more eco-friendly and a lot of other firms and networks are following their lead. Earlier in May, Elon Musk even announced the suspension of bitcoin payments on Tesla due to concerns over bitcoin mining’s ecological impact.
