U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned the environmental impact of Greenidge Generation’s bitcoin mining operation in New York state in a thorough letter to the company’s CEO.
The Senator wrote a letter to Greendige’s CEO Jeff Kirt, expressing her concern about the company’s energy consumption and its effect on the environment and users.
Greenidge claims to be the first carbon-neutral Bitcoin miner in the United States, with a mine in upstate New York and another planned for South Carolina.
The Massachusetts Senator wrote, “Given the extraordinarily high energy usage and carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining, mining operations at Greenidge and other plants raise concerns about their impacts on the global environment, on local ecosystems, and on consumer electricity costs.”
Greenidge’s troubles stem from the fact that it relies on natural gas to generate the electricity required to mine Bitcoin.
Because natural gas is a fossil fuel, it is less environmentally friendly than renewable energy sources. As a consequence, Greenidge has drawn concerns from New York environmentalists.
In response to Warren, Greenidge released a statement saying, “the facility meets all of New York’s nation-leading environmental standards, is bringing economic opportunity to an under-served area of the state and is a model for crypto mining with widespread local support.”
The cryptocurrency developers recently have been trying to implement much greener initiatives as criticisms have been pouring due to its high energy consumption. Recently the Eth2 developers announced a program to get the community involved in testing the Merge between the Ethereum Mainnet and the PoS-based Beacon Chain. The PoS system is supposed to reduce Ethereum’s energy consumption by 99.9%.
