In Brief:
- Chain’s CEO bought the BAYC Mega Mutant Serum #69 NFT for 1,542.069 ETH or $5.8M.
- The M3 serum mutates and creates more exaggerated traits on the Ape NFT than M1 and M2 serums.
- The purchase became the largest sale of a Bored Ape serum.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s Mega Mutant Serum #69 NFT got sold for a record 1,542.069 ETH or $5.8 million. Deepak Thapliyal, the CEO of the blockchain service startup Chain, is the new owner of the rare serum NFT.
The sale of the mutant serum NFT shatters the BAYC collection’s record for the highest sale. Deepak Thapliyal bought Mega Mutant Serum #69 from BAYC member Cryptobeaker. eth on OpenSea.
a16z backed Meta4 Capital offered to buy Serum #69 for 1,500 ETH but Deepak beat them to it.
The Mega Mutant Serum is part of the Bored Ape Chemistry Club, a collection of 10,000 Mutant Serum NFTs. The NFT Bored Ape serums modify the collection’s sluggish apes.
Before using the MAYC website’s mutating feature to mutate a Bored Ape with a serum, an individual must own both a Bored Ape NFT and a serum NFT in their wallet.
The collection is divided into three tiers, with M1 and M2 Mutant Serums altering the original ape while maintaining some of its original qualities. The Mega Mutant or M3 serum on the other hand produces more exaggerated traits than the original NFT.
Deepak Thapliyal explained via a Twitter thread why he spent such a large amount on the BAYC NFT art. He stated adoptability and rarity as the two reasons for the NFTs’ price.
“Adoptability is taking over. The #BAYC & #MAYC NFTs have taken the world by storm. The partnership w/ @animocabrands is a big deal in bringing global adoption to #BAYC. These and punks will go down in history as the #BTC & #ETH of NFTs,” stated Thapliyal.
Regarding rarity, he mentioned that as the Mega Mutant Apes are only 13 in total number and the serum can maybe unveil a gold or trippy ape NFT after mutation.
Deepak spent a total of $7.2 million on both the Ape and serum. He stated that he is not planning to sell the M3 Ultra Rare Mutant Ape for anything less than 4206.9 ETH or maybe not going to sell the NFT at all.
Thapliyal added, “We are going to throw a banger of a reveal CHUG party in the Metaverse. I am working with a number of community members to set this up and working on securing a main stream DJ performance for it.”
It’s not the first instance a Mutant Serum has garnered such a high price. Taylor Gerring, the co-founder of Ethereum, paid $3.6 million for an M3 Serum from a seller who had gotten it for free via airdrop as a prize for being a member of the BAYC community.
The demand for unique NFT collections continues to be rising with yet another celebrity also joining the league of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. The NFT known as “EminApe” was sold to rapper Eminem for 125.45 ETH last Thursday by BAYC member GeeGazza.
