Japanese gaming giant Konami is preparing for the year 2022 by releasing the Konami Memorial NFT collection to celebrate Castlevania’s 35th anniversary. An auction will be held from January 12 to 14, 2022 to sell a set of 14 non-fungible tokens.
The majority of the collection is made up of gifs of gameplay clips from the first three Castlevania games played on various home computers, with the rest consisting of representations of in-game maps and variations of imagery from Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.
The auction will occur within the United Kingdom and Japan in addition to the United States. Those who purchase the first batch through the OpenSea NFT marketplace will have their usernames immortalised on Komani’s website.
According to Konami, the Castlevania collection is just the beginning as it marks the very first project in “a new initiative to share content that has been loved by players all over the world, for many years,” with the company planning to further “explore new developments and listen to player feedback following this initial collection.”
The NFTs, dubbed “The KONAMI MEMORIAL NFT collection,” feature gameplay videos from some of the franchise’s early releases, such as Simon’s Quest and Dracula’s Curse, and date back to 1986, when the franchise’s first console game was launched. Konami also stated that “newly-drawn art” will be available for auction, albeit NFT buyers will not receive an actual copy.
Unlike Ubisoft’s Quartz and the slow-selling NFTs debuted with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Konami’s Castlevania NFTs take a more traditional approach in that they aren’t used in any of the series’ games. Much of the debate regarding non-fungible tokens in gaming arises from their unjustified inclusion in online experiences, which is completely absent here. Konami’s new NFTs, on the other hand, is likely to fetch high prices because of their rarity.
