Legendary tennis player Serena Williams joined fantasy soccer NFT platform Sorare as a board advisor.
Sorare is an Ethereum blockchain-based fantasy game leveraging NFTs. It enables users to purchase NFTs of well-known players such as Lionel Messi, field them in fantasy leagues, and trade them with other users.
Serena will advise the board on a variety of topics, including strengthening Sorare’s relationships with athletes around the world.
Serene will provide advice on Sorare’s expansion strategies into new sports categories, including women’s sports, as well as future impact initiatives to make Web3 more inclusive and versatile.
Serena believes that NFTs have the potential to be a powerful tool for bringing equity and investment to women’s sports.
Serena is also a huge enthusiast of NFTs and she currently has CryptoPunk NFT #2950 as her Twitter display picture. On Thursday the tennis star player even posted a picture of a Bored Ape NFT #5797 from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection.
BAYC #5797 is an ape with a new punk blue color as its background, sad eyes, pink fur, and bored mouth.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion discreetly launched her own venture capital firm in 2014, titled Serena Ventures, which she only disclosed five years later in an April 2019 Instagram post.
Sorare’s CEO Nicolas Julia noted “The strategic counsel that Serena will bring in building one of the most iconic sports entertainment brands is invaluable. I’m thrilled to have her join the team. Together, we’ll forge new ways for fans to engage with their favorite athletes.”
With this partnership both Serena and Sorare are aiming to build the future of sports entertainment on Web3, enabling everyone a chance to own a piece of the games they love.
By the end of December 2021, Sorare had 1 million registered members, 270,000 of whom were active monthly, and 90,000 had bought in-game NFTs with fiat or crypto to activate extra functionalities.
Many big names from the whole sports industry have been hopping into the NFT and crypto bandwagon lately. Just last month Swiss Professional golfer Albane Valenzuela joined crypto exchange FTX as its first professional golf athlete ambassador. Numerous sportspeople, including Tom Brady, Trevor Lawrence, Stephen Curry, and Shohei Ohtani are already a part of FTX.
