In Brief:
- Blockscan Chat is an Ethereum-based “wallet-to-wallet” instant messaging service.
- It is currently in its Beta testing stage.
- Any user who violates its acceptable regulations may be barred from using some or all of the connected services.
The authors of Etherscan, a prominent Ethereum (ETH) block explorer and analytics platform, have announced the release of Blockscan Chat, an Ethereum-based “wallet-to-wallet” instant messaging service.
On its website, the team describes Blockscan Chat as “a messaging platform for users to simply and instantaneously chat with each other, wallet-to-wallet.”
The creators of Etherscan, a popular block explorer and analytics platform for Blockscan is currently in beta testing mode, and it currently allows users to engage in wallet-to-wallet chat, access chats from multiple devices, block spam or unwanted addresses, and get notified on the block explorer when a message has been received.
Etherescan teased the new feature with a tweet on January 26 that read “wonder what’s the point…?” and included a screenshot of the platform’s messaging alerts.
While the new feature is a brilliant way to communicate with other anonymous people – for example, to negotiate an anonymous purchase – it could also come in handy when dealing with hackers, who have left messages embedded in Ethereum transactions to communicate with individuals and crypto-operated platforms.
Some crypto users seem to be excited about the service, referring to the tool as “Ethereum Instant Messenger.”
Blockscan claims that their data is stored by “global hosting providers” with servers in several areas, with inactive data being erased after 24 months.
It also means that the data will be released or transferred to partners such as data warehouses, IT service providers, and data analysis firms, rather than being shared with third parties.
Any user who violates its acceptable use regulations, such as supplying false, inaccurate, or misleading information, may be barred from using some or all of Blockscan and Etherscan’s connected services, according to its terms of service.
Everyone who has an Ethereum wallet, such as MetaMask, can use the service. When a user links their Etheruem wallet to Blockscan Chat, they can start messaging other addresses and be notified when their address receives a message on the block explorer.
The Blockscan Chat team further warned:
“Never share your confidential information, passwords, private keys or seed phrases with ANYONE! Be extra careful when receiving any external links or online forms. Always keep an eye out for malicious parties in the Dark Forest.”
Earlier this month, a cybersecurity researcher called the “The Multichain Hack” incident “the worst way to treat a vulnerability.”
