In Brief:
- AssangeDAO raised 12,569 ETH through a contribution campaign, the highest ETH raising in history.
- The fund will be used to bid for the “Censored” NFT collection by PAK.
- The fund will be used in the legal fight of Assange to stop extradition to the U.S.
AssangeDAO received a record-breaking contribution of 12,569 ETH from those who raised voices to free Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from prison. As per the current price, the value is equivalent to $38.8 million.
Since 2019, Assange is locked in a London jail and fighting extradition to the United States following a court ruling in December that overturned the decision of the British court for barring extradition.
The donation first began on Feb 4 and eventually funding soared over the weekend. In the last 24-hours contribution increased in an exponential manner and doubled. On Twitter, AssangeDAO claimed that it is now the biggest JuiceBox Ethereum raise in DAO’s history and crossed the early mark established by ConstitutionDAO.
ConstitutionDAO was formed to acquire an original copy of the United States Constitution. It has accumulated $49 million worth of ETH funds in 72 hours. Hence, it failed to win a bid and Ken Griffin placed a higher bid than DAO. Lately, members of DAO decided to shut down ConstitutionDAO after returning funds.
However, AssangeDAO is the only largest funded DAO in terms of ETH. When ConstitutionDAO raised capital, at that time Ethereum value was higher than the current ETH market value.
AssangeDAO is issuing JUSTICE tokens in exchange for ETH from contributors. The fund will be utilized to place a bid on an NFT collection entitled “Censored” curated by artist Pak in Collaboration with Julian Assange.
The remuneration generated from NFT sales will be used in Assange’s defense fund for “legal fees and campaigning to raise awareness about Julian’s extradition case.”
The buzz for AssangeDAO was started in Dec 2021, when the U.S government got approval for an appeal from the U.K court ruling that barred Assange’s extradition. The official website affirms that “if extradited to the United States, Assange faces 175 years in prison for publishing truthful information.”
