In Brief:
- A Phoenix couple tied the knot on the Rose Law Group’s estate on Decentraland.
- This is the FIRST-ever, never done before wedding on Decentraland.
- Rose Law Group helped couple to label ‘legal marriage’ with blockchain record.
A couple from Phoenix got married in the “digital way” on the Decentraland. This is the first time Decentraland witnessed a Meta-marriage, wedding ceremony on its platform.
On Feb 5, In the Decentraland around 2000 guests and Supreme Court Justice officiant, Clint Bolick attended virtually the marriage of Ryan and Candice Hurley.
To legalize virtual matrimony, the couple has hired Rose Law Group. About this adorable wedding function, Group’s founder and president Jorden Rose claims that this is the first time a wedding was held in any blockchain-based metaverse.
“Because the metaverse is still in its infancy, we have developed the legal paradigm for a legally recognized marriage,” she said.
The function was organized in the virtual estate in the Decentraland, acquired by Rose Law Group. On Decentraland, the group built a “meta-marriage framework” by adding a “Virtual Premarital Agreement” that authenticated the virtual identity of the couple and digital assets from blockchain data.
Moreover, “Meta-Marriage License” tokenized the couple’s virtual identities and place of marriage on the blockchain as an NFT.
“There currently is no legal framework for marriage in the Metaverse, so whether or not it will be legally binding is more a question of contract.”
“Unlike the real world, the metaverse isn’t limited by physical constraints that restrict your perfect wedding. Only in the Metaverse can your wildest, most imaginative dream wedding be a reality,” stated the event description on Decentraland. Rose added:
“We see the future of the metaverse as being truly decentralized and existing almost completely on the blockchain, so the future of marriage in the metaverse will not need to have a record of their marriage in the real world.
As metaverse platforms are still in the development phase, the function faced some unwanted technical issues. Due to the sudden rush of crowds on the platform, the Decentraland server failed to work in a smooth manner. Also, NFT gifts for invited guests were minted in less than 20 minutes.
Despite the marriage being performed in the presence of a lawsuit, many legal advisors refuted to call this marriage “legal”. As per the American Marriage Ministries, they must need a physical presence in the marriage at the same location. Last year, In April a couple from California exchanged their tokenized rings using Ethereum smart contract in their wedding. Also, A couple from India has also planned their virtual marriage on Polygon Network.
