The BAYC creator, Yuga Labs’ CEO Nicole Muniz, who had earlier confirmed the identities of the founders of BAYC, had a sit-down interview with D3 Network, expressing that the release of identities by Buzzfeed, was “very very dangerous for them and their families”.
In Brief:
- In an interview, Nicole calls out Buzzfeed on the lack of purpose of the news on the identities revelation
- Further, she mentions the misconception of BAYC founders being ‘crypto whales’.
On asking about her take on the Co-founders’ claims to be doxxed, Nicole replied, “We believe in freedom of the press, we believe in journalistic integrity”.
She reminisced on the time Buzzfeed called her to confirm the identities saying, “When I got the phone call saying that they were going to release their identities, I asked for time so that we could tell their families so that we could make sure they were safe. I was told I had 30 minutes.”
Reporters make decisions about whether identifying an anonymous person benefits the public, whether the information is likely to remain private if not reported, and whether reporting it could seriously endanger them. But, she chastised Buzzfeed’s story for lacking a clear purpose.
“It was a story about ‘what if,’ and that sort of leaves me with this feeling of just like, it just felt so dangerous. And the only thing that people got out of it was just knowing their real names,” added Muniz.
Nicole Muniz mentioned that there is a misconception that the founders of BAYC are ‘crypto whales’, that can attract “nefarious characters”, leading to kidnappings and many other vile actions.
Later on, the interviewer asked her about her feeling when knowing the founders can make it less risky for the people in the crypto world to which she said that those who are in the community, are there knowing the risks already attached.
“If this isn’t for you yet, you don’t have to ape-in,” further saying that it [crypto community] might not be for everybody, and it’s okay.
Recently, the identities of two of the most influential personas in the crypto world, known as “Gordon Goner” and “Gargamel,” were revealed. They are the pseudonymous co-founders of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the most expensive and prestigious collections of nonfungible token avatars (or NFTs).
Greg Solano and Wylie Aronow wanted to remain anonymous and claim they were “doxxed” against their will.
