The Major League Baseball (MLB) trading card company Topps launched its NFT “Topps Timeless Series”, which has written a new chapter in the sports NFT history.
As per the report, this 1-of-1 NFT features the baseball card of 1952 New York Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle, which was sold for 175 ETH on the leading marketplace, OpenSea. The valuation of 175 ETH is over $471K at the time of selling.
In partnership with the Mantle Estate and Major League Baseball, this NFT cements Mantle’s legacy on the Ethereum blockchain with the first-ever licensed MLB NFT auction on OpenSea.
This auction has placed the sale as the third-largest ever sport NFT sale. It is also the second-highest-priced sports NFT ever sold on OpenSea.
“This card has been part of my father’s legacy for 70 years, and it is amazing to see its continued impact with collectors and baseball fans around the world,” the Mantle sons said in a statement. “We are very pleased to share this piece of history with Topps in a new and exciting way through NFTs.”
The NFT of the physical version of cards is the most popular NFTs in the baseball card market, the current price of which varies from $30,000 to $250,000, depending on their graded condition.
Topps has been playing a crucial role for many sports NFTs since last year. In August, Topps joined hands with Bundesliga to release an exclusive NFT trading NFT collection.
