Located in Beijing, Tsinghua University launched the first metaverse lab of China. The laboratory will be used to study the growing and expanding industry of metaverse in the country.
The laboratory will also analyze and research trends in the metaverse, the various fields in the metaverse and the path ahead for media companies.
The new laboratory was established in partnership between Tsinghua’s School of Journalism and Communications and Chinese Online (COL). Chinese Online is one of the largest genuine digital content providers in China.
The in-person announcement event was led by Xiang Botao, deputy secretary of the party committee of Tsinghua University, and Tong Zhilei, chairman and president of Chinese Online Group. The event was simultaneously hosted on the metaverse by virtual anchors.
Tsinghua University has been a leader in the metaverse research field. The university launched a Metaverse Robot System last year. The Robot System has been working to develop a link between the virtual and physical world.
China has seen mainstream expansion of the metaverse and NFT field since the past few months. The Chinese electric automobile maker Xpeng has launched car-model-themed NFTs on Jingtan. Jingtan is the NFT marketplace launched by Alibaba.
Despite the rapidly increasing popularity of NFTs and metaverse, China has kept a strict eye on these sectors for financial crimes such as money laundering and illegal fundraising. China has also managed to ban cryptocurrencies and has plans to develop an NFT sector not linked to crypto.
