The NBA in partnership with NBPA has announced the launch of ‘Association NFTs’, as a part of their Web3 initiative, NBAxNFT. The NBA plans to launch 18,000 NFTs as a part of this collection.
The collection will feature 75 dynamic NFTs of each player from the 16 different NBA teams participating in the playoffs.
The NFTs will be assigned in a blind-mint fashion using the Chainlink VRF. The minting will take place on April 22.
The traits and accessories of the NFTs will change over the course of the playoffs. The changes will be based on the player’s performance such as three pointers, assists and more. The frame and background of the NFTs will also change according to the team’s performance.
Achievements accomplished by the player before April 22, will also be included in player’s NFT at the time of reveal. These automated changes are possible because of the pre-set achievements which are written into the Galaxis smart contract.
The Ethereum NFTs will be free to mint, however collectors will be charged gas fees. Only one NFT can be minted per wallet.
Although, not everyone can mint these NFTs. To be able to mint these NFTs, collectors need to be on the ‘allow list’. Spots on the allow list were given to the earliest members of the NBA Discord.
Out of these 18,000 NFTs, 480 NFTs are reserved and will be minted for the NBA and NBPA. Another 1,900 NFTs are reserved for the NBA Top Shot community.
Not only the NBA but even the WNBA has been capitalizing on this NFT trend. Yesterday, the WNBA’S New York Liberty announced a 400 piece NFT collection, which will drop on May 7. The exclusive collection celebrates the “ongoing cultural explosion of nail art through a unique Liberty-oriented lens”.
