The Twitter account of the University of Philippines got hacked by NFT scammers in order to promote the NFT drop of a very famous Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami.
The hackers took over the account on Monday at 7:20 PM according to the statement released by the University of Philippines Media and Public Relations Office (UP MPRO).
The official statement was released on Facebook by the University of Philippines which read “Unknown users took over @upsystem on Twitter at 7:20 PM on 25 April, Monday. Since then, the account has been renamed and has posted content not affiliated with the University”.
The attackers renamed the Twitter account to “takashi murakami” and tweeted about an airdrop of “Murakami Flower Seeds” NFTs. They also deleted the bio and changed the location of the account to Tokyo.
The NFTs were free to claim but a ‘Gas’ fee was applicable according to some tweets. Anyhow, the tweets got deleted fairly quickly and the account was restored.
The university also said that UP MPRO was trying to retrieve the account as soon as possible and meanwhile all the news and updates regarding the university would be released on their other social media accounts.
Hackers have tried to take over in many fields like NFTs, Crypto Exchanges, Banks and e-wallets among others. It is not surprising that hackers are trying to get into the institutional sector as well. Recently, the Twitter handle of the UGC of India was attacked by the hackers, however it was restored soon.
