The founder, CEO and chief engineer at SpaceX, Elon Musk has changed his Twitter profile picture to a collage of Bored Apes from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection.
The collage features more than a dozen Apes with the Ape 5809 in the center. The image appears to be a stock photo.
Elon Musk later joked about the uniqueness of NFTs by tweeting “I dunno … seems kinda fungible” to his massive following of 90 million on Twitter.
This whole profile picture change scene caused a price pump of Apecoin, the token launched by BAYC creator Yuga Labs. The token’s price went up by 20% to $17.64. All of these gains were, however, wiped out from the market a few hours later.
The collage in the profile picture of Musk was created by the auction house Sotheby. The collage was created for the auction of 101 Bored Apes. Sotheby’s vice president for digital art, Michael Bouhanna posted a tweet taking credit for the collage and asked Musk to either remove the collage from his profile picture or to credit him.
Elon Musk recently bought the social media platform, Twitter. However, this change in the display picture does not clearly signify anything, such as whether he owns certain Bored Ape NFTs.
The value of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs has risen exponentially since they first dropped. These NFTs are created by Yuga Labs. The Bored Ape NFTs have caused the gas fees on Ethereum to rise to thousands of dollars due to the high number of transactions.
