The world’s largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea, was targeted by hackers this morning. The official Discord server of the marketplace was taken over by hackers.
The hackers first posted an announcement on the channel which said that Youtube has partnered with OpenSea to drop an NFT collection. The collaboration will result in the drop of a 100 mint passes named, “YouTube Genesis Mint Passes”.
“We have partnered with YouTube to bring their community into the NFT Space, and we’re releasing a mint pass with them that will allow holders to mint their project for free along with getting other insane utilities for being a holder of it.”
The announcement continued saying that the discord users can mint the passes for free, and the pass will give them access to the upcoming collaborative project.
“You are able to get this mint pass below for 100% free. There will only be of these however, once they are gone they won’t be coming back and you will have to purchase off the Opensea marketplace. Congratulations to those who get one.”
The announcement ended with a link to a phishing site where users were tricked into signing a transaction that would give the hackers complete control over the NFTs in the signees wallets.
The hackers were also able to post follow-ups to the announcement stating that 70% of the passes were already minted to create a fake hype.
The losses from the hack are currently small as can be verified from on-chain data on Etherscan. A total of six wallets were compromised and the most valuable NFT stolen was a ConiunPass which has a market value of around 0.84 ETH or $2,300.
Although, how the hackers got access to the channel is still under investigation, early reports show that the hackers took over the channel via the server’s webhook.
Only a few days ago, the coveted BAYC’s official Instagram account was hacked resulting in a loss of over 91 NFTs from several users. The hacker posted a fraudulent link on their official Instagram page claiming that Bored Ape developer Yuga Labs is airdropping free land for its much anticipated Otherside project.
BAYC has continuously been vulnerable to hack attacks as just on the April Fools day its official Discord channel got compromised resulting in the theft of a MAYC NFT.
