The London-based team, Arsenal Football Club has partnered with Unagi to join Ultimate Champions, a fantasy football game on the blockchain.
Ultimate Champions is a cross-league fantasy football game which can be played for free. Users can trade NFTs in the game with other players.
The game supports in-game currency which can be earned and spent on the platform itself.
Gamers can build an international team with players from any league, which is a part of Ultimate Champions.
Thus gamers need quite a lot of background knowledge about football to make a successful team.
The game also values every position in the pitch using wide ranging statistics from Stats Performance. Every player is rewarded for their play, including tackles and passes, not just goals and assists.
The game features a play-to-earn model and gamers need to collect NFTs of players which can then be traded with other players.
Remi Pellerin, CEO of Unagi said, “Arsenal’s young crop of players is perfectly suited to our innovative fantasy game: users will be able to scout for young talent, collect their favourite players’ digital cards, and play with them every week.”
“The value of these cards will evolve over time in line with the real performances of each Arsenal player – just like in any fantasy game. Except in Ultimate Champions, you get to keep the cards you collect and play with them season after season.”
The game also features two tokens- a $CHAMP token, which is a utility token across the Ultimate Champions platforms and the other is a $MGC token, which means manager contract tokens. This token is the main source of reward for players.
Juliet Slot, Arsenal’s Chief Commercial Officer said, “We’re privileged to be the only Premier League club to join the free to play game and bring this brilliant concept to our supporters around the world, giving them the opportunity to apply their global football knowledge and test themselves as a football manager.”
“We’re looking forward to working together to give our supporters the ultimate gaming experience.”
Football has been engaging the crypto industry in various different ways. Certain clubs launch fan tokens, while some launch NFTs. Recently a La Liga club, RCD Espanyol partnered with Crypto Snack to accept payments in cryptocurrencies next season.
