The top-notch space research organization, NASA announced the NASA MarsXR challenge to create a metaverse experience that can reflect the atmospheric conditions and situations on Mars.
Along with NASA, Buendea and Epic Games are also organizers of this event. In an official blog post, NASA asked developers who hold a keen interest in virtual reality and its different aspects to join the challenges.
The challenge requires developers to build essential assets and scenarios for the Mars simulation project ‘Mars XR Operations Support System’ (XOSS) environment by using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.
Unreal Engine 5 is the world’s most advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photoreal visuals and immersive experiences.
The project will help NASA to comprehend the conditions on Mars as well as it will be used for test procedures. The MarsXR Engine already contains the virtual reality experience of different aspects such as full Martian days, weather and gravity on Mars, some existing assets such as suits and rovers and a 400 km2 researched MARS area.
According to the blog post, there are 5 different categories available to participate in the NASA MarsXR challenge :
- Set Up Camp
- Scientific Research
- Maintenance
- Exploration
- Blow Our Minds
The total prize pool for this challenge will be $70,000, which is going to be distributed between 20 individuals. This means that every category will have 4 prizes with $6,000 for each category winner.
According to the announcement, “Teams may submit multiple submissions in each category and submit to multiple categories. Each submission should be materially different from the other submissions the team has made in relation to content and focus. Teams are eligible to and may win more than one award.”
