Online shopping website eBay has partnered with Sports Illustrated x Wayne Gretzky NFT collection on NFT platform OneOf to release its first-ever “Genesis” NFT Collection.
The collection comprises 13 limited-edition NFTs each of which contains a 3-D animation of Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky making one of his signatures move on the ice.
It is to commemorate the 1982 “Sportsman of The Year” Sports Illustrated cover showcasing Gretzky coming off an unprecedented third straight MVP run as the new NHL record holder for most goals in the season.
These 13 different types of NFTs of 4 tiers of rarity comprise:
- green at 299 editions each,
- gold at 199 editions each,
- platinum at 99 editions each, and
- diamond at 15 editions each.
They are up for sale on eBay’s marketplace where users are sent a redemption link to their email to receive their NFT outside of the platform. These NFTs can be resold on the OneOf marketplace.
At the time of writing, the limited-edition diamond, platinum, and gold tiers worth $1,500, $100, and $25 a piece have already sold out.
OneOf describes itself as a “green” NFT platform that utilizes energy-efficient blockchain technology. With this partnership, eBay can combine its global reach with OneOf’s eco-conscious Web3 technology and will continue its push into NFTs with digital reinterpretations of various Sports Illustrated covers.
Dawn Block, VP of Collectibles, Electronics, and Home at eBay touted how blockchain technology is viewed as an investment opportunity for enthusiasts saying, “Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere. This builds upon our commitment to deliver high passion, high-value items to the eBay community of buyers and sellers.”
