Following a partnership with The Sandbox, PCCW and HKT have become the first Hong Kong-based communications, media, and technology (CMT) organizations to join the metaverse.
According to the announcement, the two companies have bought virtual land in the Mega-City which is a Hong Kong-inspired neighborhood in The Sandbox.
PCCW and HKT want to establish the world’s first virtual 5G mobile network in the metaverse which will revolutionize traditional cinema, television, and music.
The companies will offer additional cutting-edge financial and health technology, as well as e-commerce solutions, to create an intriguing virtual ‘metacommunity’ that will deliver an entirely new 5G-enabled entertainment experience.
The collaboration with The Sandbox allows PCCW and HKT to discover different business opportunities by developing innovative services.
The Sandbox COO and co-founder Sebastien Borget, stated “We’re excited to see PCCW and HKT enter the metaverse and educate their large 5G and broadband user base on the innovations from NFT ownership and Web3 gaming.”
The Sandbox seeks to make significant contributions to Hong Kong’s future as a global technology innovation hub, increasing its productivity and creating long-term value.
Just last month, the Sandbox added a new neighborhood Mega City 2 in its metaverse, following the success of Mega City 1. There were 38 regular LANDs put for auction on OpenSea. They appear as white squares on The Sandbox map.
Susanna Hui, Acting Group Managing Director of PCCW and Group Managing Director of HKT, added “We are pleased to partner with The Sandbox to enter the metaverse and explore Web3, where we can seize the boundless opportunities manifesting in different aspects of our daily lives.”
