The Estonian crypto exchange, WhiteBit, bought the winner’s Eurovision trophy from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in an online auction to raise funds for Ukraine’s army. The trophy was bought for 500 ETH ($940,000), as per reports.
The glass microphone-casted trophy was one of the several items that were sold by Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra on Sunday to bolster the defense forces fighting Russia’s invasion in February. The band won the Eurovision title earlier this month for its song Stefania.
The Kalush Orchestra posted on its social media account, “We appreciate each and everyone of you who donated to this auction and a special thanks to the team WhiteBit who purchased the trophy for $900,000 and are now the rightful owners.”
The auction was held with the intention of raising funds for medical treatment and supplies, and also for purchasing drones for the military.
As the situation in Ukraine grew intense with every passing day, the government has started accepting cryptos and NFTs for donation. Consequently, NFTs in the country have gained traction more than ever in the past few months.
