The CEO and founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney got furious on “crypto marketplace” to allegedly “enable” the fake cryptocurrency dubbed “Fortnite”.
Sweeny bashed out crypto marketplace over permitting fake Fortnite tokens. Fortnite is the popular battle royale game from Epic Games. Initially released in 2017, it has now garnered over 350 million registered users globally.
Sweeney denied the existence of Fortnite tokens and said that “Twitter accounts promoting this sort of thing are a scam.” He further went on to say that Epic’s lawyers are working towards taking a legal step against the creators responsible for this token.
“Also, shame on the cryptocurrency marketplace enabling such things,” said Sweeney about the exchanges enabling the trade of these coins.
Sweeney was referring to the “Fortnite Token” (FNT), which is being traded on the decentralized exchanges like SushiSwap, PancakeSwap and Kronaswap.
Currently there are no results when those coins are searched on these decentralized exchanges which enable their consumers to trade any token virtually, as long as those users manually address the token’s contract.
“This account is operating a scam,” Sweeney replied to a Tweet of a Twitter account named @fortnite_token. “Anyone involved is being scammed,” he added in another reply.
The Twitter account behind the fake Fortnite token tried to explain that it was not a scam, in spite of the “CEO of Fortnite” saying that it was.
The token account said that “It is a fair-launched, community-driven, cryptocurrency project created by Fortnite game fans, with no specified owner or company structure behind or CEO deciding on its future.”
However Sweeney argued that “That’s not how trademarks and copyrights work though. You can’t use the Fortnite name and images without permission to market an unrelated product.”
He explained that using Fortnite’s name and images without permission is copyright infringement and hence it is not legal.
The CEO also replied to multiple Tweets of the Token account and simply wrote “Scam” over and over.
As per the data from Nomix, it proves that a few people are trading the FNT token. The FNT is down 96% from its January’s all-time high and it is currently worth almost zero at $0.0000007673. In the past day, the token has traded about $250 in total.
Epic Games does not have any Fortnite related cryptocurrency currently, however, the firm is stepping into Web3. Epic Games partnered with Gala Games and is now dropping its first blockchain game with NFTs dubbed Grit.
Previously, Sweeny said that Epic Games is not diving into NFTs, however today he clarified his thoughts upon NFTs via a Tweet.
“When new technology emerges, some put it to good use, and others put it to bad use. It would be too short-sighted to ban an entire field of technology for such a reason,” wrote the CEO.
