The National Security Agency(NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden says that cryptocurrencies have more value in their use than in their investment, and that he does not advise anyone to put their money into crypto as an investment.
Snowden, who is also the president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, was speaking at the CoinDesk’s Consensus 2022 conference, in Austin, Texas.
“I use bitcoin to use it. In 2013, bitcoin is what I used to pay for the servers pseudonymously,” Snowden noted.
Snowden doesn’t advise people to invest in cryptocurrencies as a technology. He feels like that’s what distances him from a lot of others in the community.
Snowden also supported the crypto sector amidst recent criticism from a group of tech experts who slammed cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology earlier this month.
Snowden feels the experts were intentionally misrepresenting the crypto sector, reiterating a variety of old points that have been stated many times before.
He noted “The letter is an argument for the status quo. There are so many ways to address all of their concerns. All the people who have signed this letter could understand this industry. They certainly should.”
When it comes to internet privacy, Snowden feels that encrypting the data of user communication has made good advances. But he believes the metadata which proves that these interactions took place remains a matter of concern.
Edward Snowden was an American intelligence contractor who in 2013 revealed the existence of secret wide-ranging information-gathering programs conducted by the NSA.
In early 2016, Snowden became the president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, a San Francisco–based nonprofit organization that aims to protect journalists from hacking and government surveillance.
