Spain’s dynamic community, Catalonia, is working to create a fully digital economy inspired by the physical world. Yes, it is the metaverse, named—Cataverse.
Daniel Macro, Director General of Innovation and Digital Economy at the Government of Catalonia, attended the European Blockchain Convention (EBC) 2022. He stated that the government has taken the initiative and is working to make the region a digital hub.
Macro wants to create a digital economy that is influenced by the real world as the director of the Smart Catalonia Government Strategy. This is due to the growing popularity of blockchain technology and the metaverse.
“Cataverse will be linked to the Catalan language and the Catalan culture. That is what we want to have in this metaverse, that Catalan entities that are doing things for the culture can do that in the metaverse,” he said.
According to the minister, Barcelona, the regional capital, will also become a digital hub. He stated that a lot would depend on talent and that the government has implemented a number of policies and university programs to cultivate that talent among the young.
He went on to say that the government is attempting to strike a balance between cultivating new talent and attracting more business through a welcoming work environment.
When asked about blockchain projects that tourists can interact with in Barcelona, the minister cited a project focused on personal healthcare as well as a few others based on public transportation.
