The Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin thanks the Shiba Inu (SHIB) community for funding his Artificial Intelligence Grant program.
The Vitalik Buterin Ph.D. Fellowship in AI Existential Safety is intended for students who intend to work on AI existential safety research and are going to start Ph.D. programs in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada in 2022.
Existing Ph.D. students who would not otherwise have funding to work on AI existential safety research are also eligible for this grant fellowship.
The Ethereum creator wrote in response to a tweet about the first batch of fellowship grant winners, “Big thanks to the Shiba Inu community, whose cryptocurrency made these fellowships possible!”
Last year, Vitalik Buterin received 50% of the total supply of SHIB tokens from the anonymous developers of Shiba Inu. In May 2021, Vitalik Buterin burned 90% of his Shiba token (SHIB) which was worth $6 billion at that time.
In the same month, Vitalik Buterin donated 500 ETH & 50 trillion SHIB worth over $1.2B to India’s COVID-19 relief fund. The remaining SHIB was used to create this fellowship program.
The program will fund eight students for five years of their Ph.D., with the possibility of extension in funding.
The annual funding will cover up to $40,000 in tuition, fees, and a stipend for the student’s Ph.D. program, as well as a $10,000 fund for research-related expenses such as travel and computing.
Another grant program, a postdoctoral fellowship, will provide funding for one student with an annual stipend of $80,000 and a fund of up to $10,000.
At the time of writing, Shiba Inu is trading at a price of $0.00001169.
