The NFT community just saw someone fumbling his bag in real-time and the guy who lost the money is not even a small NFT investor. Franklin Caldwell, an NFT whale who goes by the name franklinisbored on Twitter lost about $150k by trying to make a silly joke bid on an ENS domain.
Franklin attempted to get a 100 WETH bid on an ENS domain to be tweeted by the EnsBidsBot account. Franklin may have had an ulterior motive to mock such automated Twitter accounts.
Then using a different wallet, the owner of 58 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs minted the ENS domain “stop-doing-fake-bids-its-honestly-lame-my-guy.eth.”
On his own registered ENS domain, Franklin had self-bid. Additionally, he received a bid for 1.9 ETH, or roughly $2,890. Franklin accepted the offer, calling it “the most surprising 1.891 ETH I have ever made.”
Even though he quickly agreed to the new offer, Franklin failed to revoke his own 100 WETH offer made from his second wallet, meaning the offer was still active.
The buyer took advantage, purchasing the ENS address from Franklin for $2,890 and selling it back to Franklin’s second wallet for $150,000.
So in conclusion the individual pocketed 100 WETH and returned the domain name to Franklin Caldwell.
He continued by saying that he had adequate time to revoke his offer and hadn’t been “botted”. Franklin claimed that he had returned the 1.9 ETH to the individual in the vain hope that they would also return the full offer.
In response, the seller, who uses the Twitter handle @8892OS, tweeted “I ripped this guy off for 100 eth and he just sent me another 1.9?”
Franklin later apologized for the market manipulation he did in the ENS marketplace. “Hopefully I paid enough restitution. I am sorry for letting you down. My BAYC trading habits aren’t market manipulation, but I’m sorry if that hurts the community,’ he tweeted.
A part of the community was sending encouraging messages to Franklin to cheer him up while the other half started dragging him for making a joke of the NFT space and not taking it seriously.
