Through its community-powered scam reporting platform, Chainabuse the leading blockchain intelligence solutions organization TRM Labs has reported that the NFT community has lost nearly $22 million since May 2022 with some Discord hacks being connected.
One of the shocking revelations from the analysis by TRM Labs —which specializes in digital asset compliance and risk management—includes the fact that NFT communities has faced over 100 Discord channel hacks and 15 notable Discord compromises targeting NFT servers are likely related.
According to the report, phishing attacks associated with NFT minting scams deployed through compromised Discord accounts increased by 55% in June, with at least ten such compromises occurring on June 4th (flashback: including BAYC getting hacked twice).
Other projects in the works include Bubbleworld, Parallel, Lacoste, Tasties, Anata, and others.
It was noted that hackers purposefully targeted holders of such valuable NFTs in the BAYC’s Yuga Labs Discord server phishing attack involving 200 ETH after community manager Boris Vagner’s Discord account was reportedly hacked.Â
They advertised a “BAYC, MAYC, and Otherside EXCLUSIVE Giveaway”, directing users to a fraudulent link that requested a minting fee in ETH.
Interestingly, such messages attempted to evoke a sense of urgency, urging users to act quickly.

During the hack, the attackers obtained a diverse portfolio from 18 valuable NFT projects, including Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, OthersideMeta, and MekaVerse, using a “setApprovalForAll” function from a single exploit.
The data also suggested that the hackers used similar patterns of behavior and tactics to scam Discord users.
They included using phishing and fraudulent accounts posing as administrators, exploiting bot vulnerabilities such as the Mee6 bot, and the critical one where attackers even updated administrator settings to prevent Discord moderators from interfering with the hackers’ operations.
