The English football club Oxford City (OCFC) will accept Bitcoin as an alternative to card and cash for tickets, food, and drink at their RAW Charging Stadium, in partnership with Coincorner.
With this Oxford City became the first National League football club to accept matchday payments in bitcoins.
This means Coincorner will act as a catalyst to move payments with the help of Bolt card, the world’s first contactless Bitcoin Lightning card.
Coincorner has introduced a brand new limited edition run of Oxford City FC branded Bolt Cards, which is available to buy in the club shop.
The payments will be accepted from August 6 when the season begins at Saturday’s National League South opener against Eastbourne Borough.
The Isle of Man-based CoinCorner, has been confirmed to be the back of the shirt sponsors for Oxford City. The home and away kits would have a bitcoin logo on them.
OCFC director Justin Merritt, stated, “Embracing the latest technologies and innovations to ensure Oxford City FC can continue to operate as a self-sustaining club is a key part of our long-term objectives.”
Merritt further stated the club wishes to make paying via bitcoins a ‘new normal’ in English football.
Scott stated, “For a long time, the idea of paying with Bitcoin seemed alien to both businesses and individuals, but since the launch of The Bolt Card and the ability to “tap and pay” with Bitcoin via Lightning, the user experience is quick, easy and familiar to everyone.”
Moreover, Scott said that it is pleasing to see a football club adapt Bitcoin payment in the National League. Also opining on the scenario of digital currency being used across the UK, by sports fans and event goers.
