A British national, Christopher Hamilton, who allegedly played as an accomplice to Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova’s crypto Ponzi scheme OneCoin, faces deportation to the United States. He has been charged in a scam going back to 2014.
A report from legal news portal Law360, revealed a court judge in the UK has given a green signal for Hamilton to be deported to the U.S. on allegations of ‘wire fraud’ and ‘money laundering’.
Hamilton allegedly played a key role in laundering $105 million through the crypto Ponzi scheme OneCoin. The scheme has scammed more than 3 million investors of more than $4 billion through the sale of packages starting in 2014.
Under the extradition contract signed between US and UK, an executive authority of the U.K. government has the authority to go ahead with Hamilton’s transfer to U.S. custody.
The U.S. Department of Justice explains that deportation “can take many months or even years to complete.” Note that, even Hamilton is likely to be able to appeal the decision.
