A hacker stole funds from Bill Murray’s NFT auction that raised 119.2 ETH (around $185,000) for charity on Thursday.
Data from Etherscan and details from Murray’s team, revealed that the hacker started targeting Murray’s personal wallet at around 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday and stole 119.2 ETH. The hacker also tried to take NFTs from the actor’s personal collection.
The attacker sent the stolen funds to a wallet address linked with Binance and Unionchain.ai.
Note that, Bill Murray’s wallet was protected from the worst of the incident due to a wallet security team from the NFT consultancy Project Venkman.
The team helped save the actor’s NFTs by transferring his expensive JPEGs that included a Damien Hirst NFT, two CryptoPunks, a Pudgy Penguin, a Cool Cat and numerous Flower Girls to a pair of safehouse wallets.
The hacker also attempted to steal 800 NFTs from Murray’s collection. However, the attempt was foiled by consultancy Project Venkman by transferring the NFTs.
The runner-up in the auction, Mishap72, has reportedly sent 120 ETH to Chive Charities to replace what was lost.
Murray’s team has filed a police report and is partnering with crypto analytics firm Chainalysis to investigate the matter.
