The South American country of Argentina’s tax and customs policy agency, the Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos (AFIP) caught three secret crypto mining sites last week.
The agency was allegedly working undercover on the three sites, Lisandro Olmos, San Juan and Córdoba.
About the site in Lisandro Olmo, the AFIP said that they “carried out a control operation on a company dedicated to cryptocurrency mining, which worked on a property declared for other commercial purposes and whose documentation could not justify the elements found there.”
Inside the location, AFIP found 142 rigs and 1,355 video cards.
It was found that the firm had declared that it was carrying out activities different from the ones that agents found when searching the place, as a way to account for the electricity consumption, “thus concealing the economic reality of the place”.
In the San Juan site, the agency found an agricultural producer housing crypto mining equipment in a fruit cooling area.
On further investigation, authorities found a taxpayer that had imported mining equipment using a company of which he was a partner. Initially, that person told the inspectors that he had sold the equipment, however, upon further investigation showed them where the machines were operating.
