The biggest girl group in the world right now, Kpop group BlackPink, bagged the best metaverse performance award at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) 2022. Blackpink was up against musicians Ariana Grande (Fortnite), BTS (YouTube), Charli XCX (Roblox), Justin Bieber (Wave), and the Twenty One Pilots (Roblox).
On August 12, MTV VMAs revealed its first-ever Metaverse experience in addition to this brand-new award category. The VMA Experience was accessible until September 3 and was introduced in the Roblox metaverse by Paramount Game Studios.
The metaverse category for this year’s VMAs was introduced following five years of dwindling viewership. MTV’s decision to feature virtual performance may help keep it current as the metaverse flourishes and draws younger audiences.
