Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem is auctioning the NFT of a closeup image of one of his iris for an organization that restores sight to people in the developing world.
He is donating the image to Ojos del Mundo (Eyes of the World), an organization that is dedicated to treating avoidable blindness. The photograph will be auctioned as part of a new fundraising campaign, Iris of the World.
The image will be sold as an NFT and a photographic print authenticated by the actor. The auction will take place online from midday on 29 September until 6pm on 6 October.
Anna Barba, director of Ojos del Mundo said, “Javier has been very generous in sharing with us something as personal and exclusive as his iris.”
“It’s a mark of identity that has borne witness to special moments that can now become a part of anyone who bids for this inspiring and original photograph. Javier’s eyes will open other eyes.”
Ojos del Mundo did not speculate as to how much money this NFT can raise, however, they said that even the reserve price of €9,000 (£7,850) would pay for 1,300 eye tests, whereas €50,000 would meet the cost of 715 cataract operations.
The organization also said that they are hoping to repeat such an auction if this one is a success. For their next donor, they are looking for an international sporting figure.
