The vice chairman of the South Korea Communications Commission (KCC), Ahn Hyoung-hwan, met Andy O’Connell, vice president of product policy and strategy of Meta Platforms allegedly to talk about methods to boost user protection in Metaverse.
According to a local news report, O’Connell arrived at the Korea Communications Commission, but kept mum regarding the details and purpose of the interview.
Heo Uk-meh, Vice President of foreign policy at the Korean branch, visited the KCC with O’Connell, stating “We requested the interview itself.”
Ahn underlined that he is working on user protection measures and requested Meta’s cooperation.
Ahn and O’Connell discussed the KCC’s digital platform user protection policy, including algorithm transparency of digital platforms, and prevention of illegal information distribution.

In particular, he is making efforts such as publishing a transparency report on the social impact of the Metaverse algorithm, running metaverse content development education programs in Korea and developing a safety code of conduct to encourage the responsibilities of metaverse ecosystem participants.
Vice President O’Connell allegedly responded by explaining Meta’s efforts to provide a safe environment for using social networking and Metaverse services.
This crucial meeting happened days after a South Korean man got sentenced to 4 years for sexual metaverse crimes. The man was found producing and storing sexually exploitative content involving minors he lured on the metaverse.
