The Twitter account of the Embassy of Oman in India was hacked, with scammers replacing the profile picture of the account to a picture of Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse.
The scammers used the reply function to spam users with fake XRP giveaway phishing links.
Although the tweets have been removed now, the Twitter account OmanEmbassy_Ind showed several retweets matching those of Garlinghouse, probably in an attempt to make the activity look legitimate.
Moreover, the hacked account responded to tweets with the hashtag XRP and promoted a fake giveaway of 100 million tokens (amounting to more than $42 million at the price of $0.42 for each XRP.)
It is speculated that the scammers behind this Ripple XRP CEO, identified as “Galringhouse”, may also have been responsible for hacking CoinDCX’s Twitter account recently. Both of these accounts feature similar fake giveaways.
