As global biggies are pouring money into metaverse to keep up with the latest technology developments, Apple CEO Tim Cook decides otherwise. Tim Cook doesn’t think metaverse is the future.
He elaborated, “I always think it’s important that people understand what something is and I’m really not sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is.” So far, Apple hasn’t disclosed any plans for the metaverse, and Cook’s latest statement explains it all.
While Mark Zuckerberg and Meta are aggressively working on the concept of the metaverse, companies like Microsoft and Disney aren’t lagging either.
Apart from this, South Korea and Meta are in talks to boost user protection in the metaverse. However, some experts suggest that any metaverse hype partially exists because people don’t really understand what it’s going to be.
Well, Tim Cook isn’t the only CEO who has questioned metaverse as a technology that can potentially reshape the future. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt also stated in June that “there’s not an agreement on what the metaverse is”.
Similarly, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel called the idea of metaverse hypothetical and ambiguous. On the other hand, Spiegel pushed his company’s plans around augmented reality (AR) where virtual elements and images are superimposed onto the real world.
On the same note, Cook favors AR and Apple is currently developing an AR/VR headset that is expected to roll out in 2023. He also believes the future of AR will go much, much further than today’s application.
He then said, “I think AR is a profound technology that will affect everything.” He went on to say, “imagine suddenly being able to teach with AR and demonstrate concepts that way or medically and so on. We are really going to look back and think about how we once lived without AR.”
