The country of El Salvador and the Swiss City of Lugano have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to spread bitcoin adoption regionally as well as in neighboring states and countries.
El Salvador ambassador to the US Milena Mayorga and the mayor of the city of Lugano Michele Foletti also announced a new “bitcoin office” of the country in Lugano.
The information was disclosed by Mayorga appearing at Lugano’s Plan B Forum. The new office will be staffed with a new Honorary Consul to encourage bitcoin adoption in the city, Italy, and Europe as well.
At the city’s Plan B event, Lugano Mayor Foletti cited El Salvador encouraging Bitcoin adoption as part of the city’s interest in becoming the pro-crypto region with the establishment of a physical government presence.
The step is taken in an effort to foster cooperation with educational and research institutions. The city has already been seen actively working to make bitcoin mainstream. Most recently, McDonald’s has begun accepting Bitcoin and Tether as payment methods in the Swiss Town of Lugano.
With the Plan B initiative, Lugano plans to allow residents to use Bitcoin, Tether, and LVGA tokens as “de facto” legal tender in many businesses and shops in the locality. It also plans on accepting crypto for paying taxes, public services, parking tickets, and tuition fees.
