Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin seems to be skeptical about “Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator” Elon Musk’s new Twitter strategies.
The new Twitter Blue system will let anyone “call themselves whatever” for $8 per month, according to Musk.
This will replace the current method of user verification and combating spammers and bots on the network. The blue check is now only accessible to a select group of users, as defined by Twitter.
Buterin acknowledged that he had some doubts about how successfully this plan would turn out. He emphasized that it will rely on precisely how much investigation is done to verify that users receiving blue checks are who they claim to be.
He said that paying $8 a month and using any name you like would undermine the blue check’s anti-scam mission. Buterin did, however, make the argument that the outcomes would be considerably different if there was more genuine verification.
Vitalik said he doesn’t get the argument that charging $8 a month for a Twitter blue tick establishes a hierarchy in the economy. He emphasized that the current blue check plan is significantly more exclusive than the previous $20 per month system.
Musk adjusted the current system’s price by country proportionate to purchasing power parity. The feature users will also get priority in replies, mentions & searches, which Musk believes is essential to defeating spam and scams.
The users will also receive the ability to post long videos & audio and will only receive half as many ads as users who don’t subscribe to the feature.
Meanwhile, crypto sleuth ZachXBT also had similar concerns as Vitalik Buterin. ZachXBT tweeted that Elon Musk is underestimating how much scammers will pay as they’ve already been spending thousands on cracked verified Twitter accounts without hesitation.
Bitcoin maximalist Michael Saylor and Binance CEO CZ endorsed the new feature saying that it will indeed destroy the bots on Twitter. After all, Binance is assisting Elon Musk in using crypto and blockchain technology against Twitter bots by creating an internal team to brainstorm plans to resolve issues such as the proliferation of bot accounts.
