Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveils the updated roadmap diagram of post-merge Ethereum, adding more concrete milestones in six phases of the project.
Vitalik shared an image with six milestone phases: The Merge, the Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge. The Scourge is the new addition to the project.
In July, Ethereum’s massive Merge upgrade successfully went live swapping out miners for validators and making the protocol safer and extra sustainable.
Following the “Surge” phase, the network is expected to conduct 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) instead of 20 TPS.
The new Scourge phase’s goal is to ensure reliable and credibly neutral transaction inclusion and avoid centralization and other protocol risks from miner-extractable value (MEV).
The Verge phase will make verifying blocks super easy. “The Verge is not just about “verkle trees”, it’s about “verification”. Endgame: fully SNARKed Ethereum,” Vitalik noted.
Vitalik noted there will be a more explicit role for quantum-proofness as a necessary component of the “endgame” protocol.
The Purge phase will simplify the protocol, eliminate technical data and limit the costs of participating in the network by clearing old history.
The ultimate Splurge phase will be utilized to fix everything else. It will bring together a number of upgrade options that didn’t fit in the other upgrades and put the final polish on the plan for enhancing the blockchain.
