The New York-based blockchain software company behind MetaMask, Consensys, announced MetaMask users in the U.S. will be able to purchase Ethereum within the app using PayPal.
The announcement states, “MetaMask will be the first Web3 wallet to leverage PayPal to drive more successful on-ramp transactions.”
This integration enables the easy purchase and transfer of ETH from PayPal to MetaMask. It is initially accessible to a limited number of PayPal users in the United States.
How to use PayPal within MetaMask
- Login into the Mobile MetaMask App.
- Click or tap on the Buy button, then select ‘PayPal.’
- Enter the desired dollar amount worth of ETH to add to your wallet; you will be redirected to PayPal to log in
- Buy your crypto via PayPal, or if you have enough ETH to complete the transaction, send it without buying more.
Lorenzo Santos, Product Manager for MetaMask, stated, “This integration with PayPal will allow our U.S. users to not just buy crypto seamlessly through MetaMask, but also to easily explore the Web3 ecosystem.”
The integration announcement did receive criticism from the community as PayPal is well known for its centralized nature. Paypal’s now-defunct misinformation policy was under scrutiny, which could’ve let the company pull $2,500 from user accounts for promoting ‘misinformation,’ driving the need for wide crypto adoption.
Metamask is also not exempt from criticism. In November, Consensys faced criticism for collecting users’ wallets and IP addresses via its blockchain infrastructure service Infura, putting user privacy at stake.
